Objective The objective of this study was to evaluate the health food situation in Xi’an by investigating the status of health food production enterprises and the consumption of consumers on health food,so as to explore a targeted health food regulation for the supervision department.Methods Health food production enterprises and the native approved functional food gained from 1996 to 2012 were comprehensive evaluated through observational study methods, including health food processing method, products distribution, function, the structured condition of employees, adding of forbidden drugs and so on. The study investigates the consumption on health food by using the epidemiological field investigation method. The demographic characteristics of the consumers, how to gain the functional food knowledge, The conditions about buying health foods was asked.Results The results by analyzing 274 native approved functional food and 44 health food production enterprises in Xi’an showed that capsules, tablets, and oral solution werethe three major health food formulations; immune regulation, alleviating physical fatigue and losing weight were the Three major health food functions; The proportion of commissioned processing enterprises increase year by year since 2011. Health food enterprises mainly distribute at Yanta and Chang in Xi’an; health food production enterprises in Xi’an were small and medium-sized. The detection rate of Forbidden drugs added was 10.56%, mainly was health food for losing weight. residents in Xi’an learned functional food knowledge mainly via TV, radio and newspapers; the rate of functional food usage was increasing with age growth and education enhancing; the rate of functional food consumption of migrant workers was lower than residents with other professions.Conclusion In Xi’an, most of health food products have similar formulations of pharmaceutical dosage forms; The distribution of health function is uneven; in Xi’an, forbidden drugs added to health food mainly was health food for losing weight. The equipment and health management situation in the pharmaceutical companies with health food shop facilities are the best. The health food usage rate of residents was not high in Xi’an; the functional food usage rate was increasing with education enhancing; The consumption functional food of migrant workers was lower than residents with other professions. the supervision department should choose more chances to report knowledge about health food, in order to strong the popular residents’ self-health awareness and functional food knowledge.
