Research On Characteristics And Effectiveness Of City Networks In China

Cities have been playing leading roles in social development. In the newly released “Plans for National new type of Urbanization(2014-2020)”, It is highlighted that Urbanization is important for the process of Socialist Modernization and promoting coordinated regional development. Cities are product of urban development. The analysis of problem of China’s city development in detail would provide theoretical references for the new type of Urbanization. This dissertation combined infrastructure construction with city networks by China’s City Network. It would provide references for city development and improving the effectiveness of city networks.This dissertation summarized and analyzed research status and relative theories on complex networks and city networks. From the view of complex networks, the characteristics and effectiveness index are defined. After the comparison between two different research perspective, the perspective of organization and the perspective infrastructure, the China city network is built based on Transportation Infrastructure and the framework is decided.The research range is defined by network nodes and links. The network nodes contain 289 prefecture-level and above cities in China, while the link synthesize three modes of transportation. Data were collected by official website search both manually and automatically. According to the ability of transportation, three modes of transportation are calculated by different weights. The different network analysis and visualization software are compared. This paper adopted Gephi to visualize.Statistic and network characteristics and network effectiveness are calculated to describe network of air, railway and high-way. By index such as: Degree Distribution, Centrality, Clustering and Shortest path length, this dissertation analyzed features of China’s City Network like “Small-World” or Randomness, class of cities and Urban Agglomeration. The center city, traffic hub and regional centers are identified. The result of effectiveness calculating reflects the operation status of China’s City Network.At last, the example of Harbour Tunnel construction between Dalian and Yantai in Bohai economic circle examines the influence on city networks brought by changes of city network structure. The influence was analyzed form four perspective. The suggestion are provided for improving city networks effectiveness.
