Instant Messaging(IM), a kind of social media, has entered the office and been widely used to complete the collaboration work because of easy to use and good of timeliness. How to exert IM’s use value has become the issue the practice increasingly concerns about. However, on the one hand, IM usage promotes interactivity among users, on the other hand it also increases interruption to users. Which kind of these two influences is more outstanding, the enterprises particularly care.Based on the above background, the study sorts out literatures related to the use of IM in the workplace, and it analyzes some existing research limitations. Then built on the perspective of workload, this paper explores usage effects of IM from both work interruption and interactivity, and examines the moderating effects of individual characteristic---polychronicity, thereby building the conceptual model of this study. To verify the research model and hypotheses, the dissertation takes employees who participate in a team project as objects to issue the survey questionnaire, and eventually 161 valid questionnaires are collected. In the data processing procedure, statistical software SPSS and PLS are employed to take data descriptive analysis, reliability and validity analysis, and structural equation modeling analysis. Empirical research findings support all of the hypotheses, and it suggests the following conclusions:(1) IM usage has significant positive effects on work interruption and interactivity.(2) Work interruption and interactivity positively affect perceived workload, and mediate completely the relationship between IM usage and perceived workload.(3) Polychronicity has positive moderating effects on the relationship between work interruption and perceived workload on one hand, and on the other hand, it has negative moderating effects on the relationship between interactivity and perceived workload.
