With the continuous growth of China’s foreign direct investment, more and more SMEs chose to "go out",which had made significant contributions to China’s economic development. To study the history, status, macroeconomic factors and determinants of SMEs conducting FDI has a certain significance for SMEs’ better “going out” activities in the future.Firstly, this thesis summarize the traditional and modern FDI theories, especially the ones about SMEs conducting FDI; then it reviews the history and status of SME’s FDI in China, and analyze the external factors of the foreign direct investment of small and medium enterprises, trying to study SMEs’ FDI activities horizontally and vertically.Secondly, In the empirical analysis part, with the fact that the China’s foreign direct investment are mostly concentrated in the manufacturing sector,the thesis uses data of listed manufacturing SMEs to analyze the determinants of foreign direct investment in manufacturing SMEs.Lastly, an conclusion was presented based on the results of empirical analysis; and according to the enterprises and governments, the dissertation also put forward promotion strategies and recommended policies.
