Consumption thought in ancient C hina contains rich contents. It is significant to research such consumption thought. After many years of policies to encourage consumption, our country’s consumption has become the first power that fuel economic growth in 2015 which has surpassed investment and export. Many economics branches are carrying a lot of research work on consumption. It will provide historic and theoretical point for other economics branches that doing research on consumption with the view of history of economic thought. It’s also benefit for us to tell C hinese story and spread Chinese voice.This paper summarizes contents and characteristics of consumption thought in ancient C hina, analyzes debates about luxury consumption or econo mical consumption, the influencing factors of the consumption thought in ancient, the influence which the consumption thought produced in ancient. We believe that there were two debates about luxury consumption or economical consumption in history. And economical consumption took the initiative after each debate. We further believe that main economic thought 、 land system、technological progress explain why consumption thought in ancient develops as such path. Main economic thought explains from industrial process view why two debates happened. Land system explains why there were no debate during two debates. Technological progress explains why economical consumption took the initiative after opium war. After these analyses we conclude the whole paper and make suggestions that our country should consider historical variable in consumption analysis and promote education consumption.
