This study based on the distribution and change of Sichuan Province’s forest in Tang Dynasty. The Tang Dynasty is the most prosperous period in Chinese ancient times, because of the increase in productivity, and the increase of population, Sichuan Province’s forests are consumed in large quantities. Sichuan Province have rich products, and close to the capital of Chang An, so Sichuan Province became the main timber consumption area, the forest distribution have obvious change. Because there are many types of landform in Sichuan Province, Because of the varied terrain I will start from the different terrains to discuss the Sichuan Province’s forest in Tang Dynasty, and these five terrains are the basin plain, hills, surrounding mountains, southwest mountains, and northwest plateau. After investigation, the forest coverage rate of Sichuan area in the Tang Dynasty has an inversely related to the population quantity. At this time, Because of terrain, climate and other factors, High mountainous areas around basin, mountainous area of Southwest Sichuan and Northwest Sichuan Plateau not suitable for human activities. In these areas people still lived in herding, hunting, so the forest coverage rate in these areas is generally higher in Tang Dynasty. While some areas such as Chengdu Plain, hilly and basin surrounding mountain area in low mountains, had a greater population density, and had more people activities, so these areas’forest destruction was serious. The primeval forest found almost exclusively in some of the most inaccessible mountains or by the rulers of insurance support mountains. What result in this translation was mainly comes to the people activities, and these activities come from the growth of population and the development of economic in Tang Dynasty. In particular, there are three reasons for it, the ruler’s forestry policy and management, the SheTian, cutting and other agricultural activities and papermaking, shipbuilding, salt mining and handicraft industry and manufacturing and so on.
