A number of emerging technologies have created new markets and made great contributions to the society,such as the Information Technology, Digital Still Camera Technology, and Tablet Personal Computer Technology. The emergence of these technologies have redefined the business scope and competition rules,had a huge impact on the traditional industry.Emerging technologies provide opportunities for the later to achieve technological and economic catch-up. These characteristics make the emerging technology has been highly concerned by the government departments, academia and the business community. In to see some positive changes brought about by the success of the emerging technology, we also see the commercialization of emerging technologies are not always smooth sailing, but will experience a period of "silent period" market,this process there may be a few months,or dozens of years.For the study of this phenomenon, the related research in the field of technology adoption life cycle, puts forward the concept of "chasm", this helps us to better understand the setbacks encountered in the commercialization of emerging technologies.But there are still many problems that cannot be answered,such as why Microsoft offered to commercial tablets in 2000 and put into practice, but the fact is that in 2010, apple’s ipad detonated the mass consumer market? how to identify the "chasm" ? Can be predicted? For enterprises in the "chasm" stage, which direction they should work toward? Which resources and conditions are to be given priority to the development of enterprises? These problems are very important for the enterprise, and this is precisely the relatively weak part of the existing research. Therefore, this article made a deep study on the phenomenon of ―chasm‖,expected to make a useful exploration for the emerging technology management research and enterprise practice.First of all, on the basis of reviewing and summarizing a large number of documents, the relevant research concept is defined.We defined the emerging technology adoption life cycle,and the concept of emerging technology "chasm".Then,we determined the position of the "chasm" in the emerging technology adoption life cycle.Secondly, this article uses the case study method, with Digital Still Camera Technology and Tablet Personal Computer Technology as the typical case to reveal the characteristics and causes of the "chasm" in the process of emerging technology commercialization. Previous studies on the characteristics of the "chasm" have revealed the psychological and behavioral differences between the two types of users.In this paper, we put forward the specific 8 factors to meet the two types of users to make purchase decisions,and their different status. The study shows that there are fundamental differences between the two stages in the 8 factors. These differences constitute the characteristics of "the chasm". While early adopters and pragmatists have totally different psychological and behavior, which determines their as two different types of adopters group,will take the buying behavior in different stages of the emerging technology adoption life cycle.Therefore, after the adoption of the early adopters, the pragmatism is not immediately adopted. Therefore, the "chasm" appeared.Finally, this article from the perspective of enterprises, according to the conclusions of the case study, puts forward some enlightening thinkings to the enterprises participate in the commercialization process of emerging technology.
