It is well known that the electromagnetic properties of a dielectric material can be characterized by two basic physical quantities, the permittivity? and the permeability?. Most of the common traditional material has positive permittivity and permeability. In this paper, we talk about a new type of artificial electromagnetic material named left hand materials which has negative permittivity and permeability is precisely contrary to traditional material. Its singular electromagnetic properties make it widely used in microwave antenna, optical frequency and many other fields and it played an irreplaceable role. In the paper, a new type left-handed material with superior performance is designed and can meet the practical needs more. The new type material is designed based on the theory of transmission line. Then, its working frequency bandwidth and cell loss is verified by software simulation and physical test. The main works in this paper are shown following.1?In the designing of new Left-handed materials, software simulation and physical test are essential. Including the operation process of high frequency electromagnetic simulation software HFSS and a simple method about how to preliminary judge the left-handed features from the simulation results. Then we model the classic Smith model using the high frequency electromagnetic simulation software HFSS, and used the method of equivalent constitutive parameters of extracting, four main electromagnetic parameters which is named the equivalent dielectric constant?, the equivalent magnetic permeability?, refractive index and impedance can be calculated. As we all known, there are many physical test methods, in this paper, considering the factors of convenient operation and easy access to get, we select the rectangular waveguide test method, and analyze the test environment and working principle in detail.2?According to the theory of the left-handed transmission line, we design a new type of broadband low-loss small unit left-handed materials, the new type materials is composed of cycle arranged double cross cell. In the case of electromagnetic wave incident in parallel, this new type left-handed material can produce left-handed features in 9.4GHz-16 GHz, the relative bandwidth reaches 52%and its unit length and unit loss are less than the same type design model. Then we produce a physical production and using rectangular waveguide test method, prove the existence of the left hand characteristics. This design of new type left-handed material model play a foundation for left-handed materials' widely used.
