The south Jiangxi area is one of the most serious soil erosion areas in southern China. It will play an important role in protecting environment and reasonable use of resources, and has a guiding significance to the regional sustainable development by studying ecological vulnerability of Gannan. Taking the south Jiangxi area as an example and based on the analysis of the main factors affecting the vulnerability, an ecological vulnerability evaluation indices system of Gannan was built with 13 indices. In such an evaluation process, the subjective weight shall be determined by entropy weight method. Then use synthetically index method to evaluate the ecological vulnerability of Gannan. In terms of the ecological vulnerability of different degrees, this study divided the eighteen cities of study area into three regions which include the extremely vulnerable region, moderately vulnerable region, and slightly vulnerable region. In order to further analysis the reason of the ecological vulnerability, we adopt principal component analysis to study the driving forces of the ecological vulnerability in this paper, and explore the mechanism that causes the vulnerability. At last, based on the assessment results, some improvement measures of ecological environment are put forward. The results and conclusions are as follows:(1)The ecological vulnerability of Gannan is mainly moderate level, and the ecological vulnerability decreased firstly and then increased. And the average index of ecological vulnerability decreased 3.08% in the year 2011 than that of 1995. In a word, the general ecological situation improves.(2)The study area's ecological vulnerability increases gradually from north to south, the ecological vulnerability of the southern area is larger than the northern area. During the same period in differential counties the ecological vulnerability has big difference. The results showed that vulnerable areas from extreme to slight vulnerability account for 43.2%, 20.4% and 36.4% respectively in 1995. In 2011, the vulnerable areas from extreme to slight vulnerability account for 14.9%, 51.7% and 33.4% respectively.(3)This thesis also analyzes the major causes of ecological vulnerability in this zone. Based on the assessment of the ecological vulnerability in the south Jiangxi area, this thesis uses the method of principal component analysis, regarding that there are three major causes contributing to the ecological vulnerability, i.e. the socio-economic conditions, soil erosion conditions and climate conditions. The socio-economic conditions are the primary driving forces, and other factors are playing a positive role.
