Most of Hot Strip Mill(referred to in this article simply as HSM) production lines in China introduce the most advanced technology and equipments of the world, the volume of the HSM production has been over 300 million tons recent years. The main technical operation of HSM is furnaces heating, sizing press, roughing mill, finishing mill and coiling. The rolling process is to drag the object to be rolled in the roll gap via the frictional force formed by rotating mill rolls and the object to be rolled, and then compress the object to make it be plastic deformed. The target of main drive system is just to drive mill rolls by main drive motors to realize the abilities above. Therefore, it is necessary to remain a trouble-free operation of the main drive system for the HSM production line manufacturing steadily.Based on main drive system of a 1580mm HSM production line, the article does intensive study of various factors that affect the reliability of main drive system. By gathering operating data detected on site, investigating other production lines, consulting equipment maintenance experience both home and aboard, series of methods are adopted to lengthen the longevity of main drive system, such as adjusting parameters, analyzing trend, experimenting and summing up, innovating and improving etc. Simultaneously, several measures are taken to reduce the broken-down rate of main drive system, such as disassembling to inspect regularly, function testing regularly,making replacement model for fragile components etc. Lengthening the longevity and reducing the broken-down rate of main drive system, both of these practices have improved reliability of main drive system dramatically.The methods of maintenance mentioned in this article have been put into practice Gradually. Through the application and assessment recent months, the research has obtained satisfied achievement, the break-down time of main drive system in HSM production line trialed has reduced to 9.3 hours this year according to 16.6 hours per year last 2 years. The longevity would be lengthened 5.46% than ever. In all, the reliability of main drive system in 1580mm HSM Production line has been promoted to a certain degree.
