A steel wire rope plays an irreplaceable role in the engineering construction for its special advantages. It has been widely used in various fields such as engineering machinery, construction machinery, elevators and so on. Current researches focus on steel wire ropes'life, wire ropes manufacturing process, the distribution of stress of steel wires inside the wire rope and nondestructive testing of wire ropes. Current researches rarely involve the transverse mechanical properties of steel wire ropes. However, the transverse mechanical properties of the wire rope and the interaction between ropes and pulleys, drums and other related parts have a direct impact on the performance of wire rope systems. So, the pertinent research is conducted in this field, and the main work includes:(1) A finite element model of the steel wire rope based on the transverse mechanical behavior is established. This simple model is suitable for researching the transverse mechanical effect between the wire rope and parts contented with it.(2) Design and completion of an experiment about measurement of the transverse deformation of wire rope. Transverse mechanical parameters are obtained using Matlab and Ansys, based on parametric inversion method.(3) The dimension optimization of MC nylon pulley-section is completed. It laid the foundation for more sophisticated pulley design.This article focuses on the transverse mechanical behavior of the wire rope during the study process. So the wire rope model is suitable for the situations in which the transverse mechanical behavior of the wire rope needs to be considered, such as computing contact force and deformation between wire rope and pulley, the effects between the upper rope and the lower layer rope when the wire rope is coiled to a drum.The method that inversed the equivalent model parameters based on experimental data contributes a certain extend to similar studies.
