Based on the development of the rotating disc mixer, design principle, mixing mechanism, effects of main process and geometric parameters on mixing performance of the rotating disc mixer and the experimental research on mixing performance were studied in this paper.The structure and working principle of the rotating disc mixer were analyzed comprehensively by use of system engineering principle. Based on the analysis of the structure and characteristic parameters of feeding and mixing section, the design principle of the rotating disc mixer was investigated.Numerical simulation of the dynamic mixing process of polymer in the rotating disc mixer was carried. The distributions of velocity, pressure and shear rate in the gap between rotary disc and stationary disc under the different geometric configurations of grinding groove on the stationary disc were solved.The fluid dynamics software POLYFLOW was used to make an intuitional and quantitative research on the effects of main process parameters (rotational speed, pressure of inlet and gap between discs) and geometric parameter (configurations of grinding groove on the stationary disc) on mixing performance of the rotating disc mixer.The effects of the main process parameters on the mixing performance of the rotating disc mixer were experimentally studied. PP/PET and PP/POE were employed to compare with the co-rotating twin-screw extruder. Moreover, the unique mixing mechanism of the rotating disc mixer was further analyzed.
