With higher strength, higher specific modulus, smaller size and other characteristics, Carbon fiber has got rapid development in the field of polymer materials in recent years. How to get stable and reliable production of carbon fiber winding has become hot and difficult problems. While industrial grade carbon fiber winding mechanism is relatively mature, study of carbon fiber winding mechanism with low-cost and non-industrial stage is still in the initial stage. In this article, the technology of filament winding for rod-shaped carbon fiber parts is studied, which is mainly suitable for sample trial in the laboratory or research institution.According to the principle of filament winding, the new carbon fiber winding mechanism of 6 DOF is developed, which is different from the traditional one. The design ideas of new carbon fiber winding machine are described. The motion platform is chosen with the analysis, and detailed design of nozzle deflection module, nozzle rotating module and mandrel fixed module is conducted. The mechanism simulation exercise is completed to detect the presence of interference. Finally, the processing and assembly of the mechanism is completed.Upon completion of the structural design, the study of linear classification, linear model and winding law of filament winding is carried on. The mathematical model of carbon fiber winding mechanism is created and linear equations and constraints of motion are derived. The effect of winding model simulation by Matlab was observed for the different shape of the parts.Based on the principle of filament winding theory and carbon fiber winding machine, movement control platform of 4 DOF is designed and constructed. The hardware control platform with industrial small motherboard, Arduino and servo drive unit is adopted. The software design is based on G code. The winding path planning is parsed in the form of G code, and the trajectory is controlled by the use of Bresenham algorithm. In the coordination of above all, the overall control of filament winding is achieved.Finally, the tests of carbon fiber winding mechanism prototype are completed, especially the ability of tension control. The parts produced by carbon fiber winding machine are also tested. The surface smoothness, tensile strength, compressive strength and three-point bending ability of the parts with no framework are verified. The bending ability of the parts with framework is also verified. Through experiments, it is showed that rod-shaped carbon fiber winding mechanism and its control system have better stability, which can meet the general production requirements of rod-shaped carbon fiber parts by winding forming.
