As key components of cross-axis transmission, bevel gears are wildly used in the field of industrial and transportation. There are many methods of bevel gear measurement, among which composite check is characterized by rich information, fast signal acquisition and processing. Composite check has become an important means of assessing and manufacturing bevel gears, however, these kind of machine tools are monopolized by foreign companies, and there is no alternative domestic product.Based on a full investigation on the worldwide similar instruments, the gear geometry and performance tester is developed. By means of transmission error and structure borne noise measurement of gear set, the tester could assess bevel gears at the highest level 4 objectively. Meanwhile, the tester also includes a grinding burn detection, the ability of best mount distance search and SPC statistical analysis. This paper mainly includes:(1) Measurement items and theoryFor the transmission characteristics of bevel gear and face gear, the paper studied the measurement principle of transmission error, structure borne noise, and grinding burn. The paper also analyzed the specific requirements of each project to design the test instrument.(2) Design of overall programConsidering function and technical specifications, the paper presents three prototype system design which include mechanical structure system design, control system design and measurement software system design. The paper also analyzed the force condition, structure accuracy and linear axis stroke.(3) Design of the mechanical structureWith the requirement of tester mechanical design, key components and accessories are designed into sub-blocks. The key components contain machine bed, axis configuration, and auto-chuck system. The accessories mainly include spindle water-cooled system, pneumohydraulic system, and lubrication.(4) Design of control systemBased on the mechanical structure and functional requirements, the control system is designed out. Hardware module selection and schematics completed firstly, after which the paper designed the operator interface and HMI control panel. With the help of Siemens TIA Portal, control software is developed. At last, the paper developed a complete gear geometry and performance tester.
