The particle board has a long develop history in the worldwide, it is widely used in building construction and packaging as its excellent physical properties and mechanical properties. As people's the continued understanding of OSB, its applications are also expanding. However the applications of OSB by traditional technology are aimed at construction(such as roof panel and wall panel). Most products are made by phenolic resin adhesive, there are not suitbale for the application in the furniture production because of its high density?high strength?the big differences in mechanical properties between the vertical and horizontal directionof the boards? high surface roughness and poor edge screw holding capabillty.In order to prepare Light weight, high strength and uniform particle board. Aspen, Balsam and PMDI was used as the main raw material to make partical board by conventional hot pressing and steam injection pressing,meanwhile the mechanical properties of the board were tested.To research the hot pressing technology of making light weight?high strength and uniform particle board,the improvement of conventional hot pressing technology andsteam injection hot pressingtechnologywas studied in different conditions such as the strand size?board density?pressing plates first closing time?plate holding position and second closing time on the performance of partical board.Key components of the project include: 1?Material characterization-density, wood structure and moisture content, as it affects strander set up and strand quality outcomes.2?Conversion to strands-target thickness 0.5 to 0.7 mm, width 18-25 mm, and length between 60 and 120 mm. Strander parameters such as operating speed, knife protrusion andcoupled with feed rate can be adjusted to optimize strand thickness and width distributions.3?Performance in key OSB processing stages: the mechanical performance changes of board by the parameters changing of mat-forming and hot pressing.The main work and conclusions were listed:1?During the conventional hot pressing, the mat fomation is random oriented by using the thicker thickness strand(0.6858mm), the pressing plates closing speed is divided to two times, controlling the plates closing speed and mat height when closing speed changes. When the mat height reaches to the 115% of its target thickness, slow down the speed of plates closing speed, the outcomes boards have a better manufacturing performance than those OSB in the current market, these boards achieve the testing requirements of making lightweight?high strength and uniform furniture grade particieboard.2?During the steam injection hot pressing, the mat fomation is random oriented by using, the outcomes boards using thinner thickness strand(0508mm)have a better manufacturing performance such as SWR?MOR?MOE?TS than those made by thicker strand. So the random oriented boards made by thinner thickness strand have a better performance in the case of the pressing plates stopped closing when pressing starts steaming.3?Compared to performances of the boards made by conventional hot pressing and steam injection hot pressing, the steam injections ones have a more uniform density profile and a higher SWR. A higher MOR?MOEand IB are found in those made by conventional hot pressing. Since most current particleboard factories do not have steam injection hot pressing equipments, so the traditional hot pressing process improvement scheme can be widely used in those factories without steam injection equipments to improve the uniformity and the mechanical properties of the plate.
