The length of cotton fibers,which is one of the most important indexes in cotton quality evaluation,has a significant influence on both spinning process and yarn quality.Since cotton is important economic crop,the improvement in the cotton fibers measurement technology can promote the cotton varieties,adjust the cotton-planting structure and increase the income of farmers.In view of the present measurement method,lots of problems can be found,such as slow testing speed,uncertain test principle,and inaccurate test result.Therefore,this paper measured cotton fiber length by image measurement based on the disadvantages of current status.And this subject further studied on the cotton fibers length distribution and length indexes.The overall scheme of this subject has been designed,mainly including the sample preparation of cotton fibers,image ac quisition and processing,experimental verification,measurement of cotton fiber length distribution,comparison between other test methods,analysis of the best sampling quantity.The results from this study are as follows:(1)The single cotton fibers w ere arranged in a black cardboard so that images of fiber can be obtained by scanner.The images were processed by image enhancement processing,image binaryzationand and morphological processing.The pixels of every cotton fiber were converted into the length.The feasibility of this method was proved with polyester filament and cotton fiber.(2)The modal length and the upper half modal length obtained by sorting the data of this research are1 to 2mm longer than Y111,KX730,HVI,AFIS.Cotton fiber uniformity is close to Y111,worse than HVI,KX730,better than AFIS.Short cotton fiber content is very close to Y111,5.91% and 5.80%.There are big difference with other methods,especially with AFIS result of the number short fiber content up to 7.44%.The main reason should be t cotton fiber were measured in this research without carding and almost no damage.(3)For two kinds of cotton fiber length data measured by image processing,N root fiber length data were randomly selected.The uniformity between length distribution curve of N root fiber and the overall distribution curve was analysed by correlation coefficient,residual square sum and area coincidence three indexes,.Through data line chart analysis of two cotton fiber,the optimal sampling range of the subject measurement method is 3000 to 3500.(4)Software development and design of cotton fiber length measurement based on image processing technology using MATLAB software.The software can measure the length of cotton fiber conveniently and quickly and present the measurement results clearly and intuitively.The feasibility of the software was verified by the fine cotton with the fineness of 1.71 dtex,and the length distribution and length index of the fine cotton were obtained.In this paper,cotton fiber length can be measured accurately by image measurement,and cotton fiber length distribution and length index can be received.In the field of cotton fiber length measurement,the results of this study have certain reference value,laying a foundation for the measurement of cotton fiber length.
