A Study On Velvets In The Qing Dynasty

In the history of Chinese silk fabric,velvet,as an unignorable branch,had no caused enough attention.There were some studies about it,but most of them focus on the partial of it.The systematic reach on Chinese traditional velvets had not been seen in current study.Therefore,this thesis aims to show a more complete system of velvets by using some research method as literature method,quantitative analysis,qualitative analysis and comparative study,etc.The major research datum are the collections which collected from many museums.Meanwhile the time period of research is mainly in the Qing dynasty.There are some aggregates had been done about the time line in Chinese history of pile fabric informations.This summary provided the brief massage from Han dynasty to the early period of the Republic of China by summing up the information of related documents and objects.It was concluded that the development of velvets in China have two threads.This thesis hold that the velvets of China have two develop lines.This two different develop patterns have their own characteristics of origin and weave structure.They developed severally until the end of Ming dynasty,afterward became a new mixture exist in Chinese history.This new velvets got its peak at Jiangsu in Qing dynasty.Meanwhile this thesis proposed a multi angle classification method.It is a classification method based on the different of weave structure and artistic expression.By using this method,we can distinguish and describe the velvet more accurately.This thesis is about the usage and artistic expression of velvets.It summarized that velvet's usage have three major categories: clothing,house soft decoration and accessory.And the diversity of velvet weave can be corresponded to its different usage pattern.Cause different use requirements can influence the choice of velvet and its artistic expression.About the artistry of velvet,this thesis propose that the theme and composition of patterns of velvet generally consistent with the essential esthetic choice.Though it also exists particularity when compared with other silk fabrics.It can be seen that the different weave structures caused different sorts velvet,and the various weave structures presenting different artistic features.These are basically five ways of artistic expressions: throw brush;different wefts;various colors of warp;embroidery and apply colors.The distinction between these artistic expressions creates various art styles of velvet.
