Sustainable development is a kind of healthy and scientific development method. Currently, the study of sustainable development goes to quantifying analysis period. On this background, ecological footprint model is used in this paper to analyze the sustainable development of ecological in Shaanxi province.In this paper, the research progress of ecological footprint model at home and abroad was studied, and the ecological footprint model related theory and concept was also introducted. The calculation method and mesures for the implementation was also metioned. We also described the characteristics and limiting factors of this model. At last, the ecological footprint model was adopted to analyze the sustainable development situation in Shaanxi province at the period of 2002 to 2013. The following conclusions can be summarized:(1) From 2002 to 2013, the ecological deficit of Shaanxi province increases, and the ecological carrying capacity indicators declined gradually. This indicates that Shaanxi province had unsustainable development trend in the past ten years.(2) From 2002 to 2013, in the respect of productive land, land occupied by fossil-fuel keeps the large proportion and that increases very quickly. This is the root cause of the increase of ecological footprint for Shaanxi province. In addition, farming land and grass land also has impact on it. Farming land has dramtic influence on ecological carrying capacity, and the farming land for Shaanxi is under great pressure.(3) From 2002 to 2013, ecological footprint per ten thousands GDP of Shaanxi province shows a downwards trends, which indicates that the utilization efficiency of nature resource is increasing gradually, and on the other hand the development speed of economy in Shaanxi province is reletively fast, and GNP increased significantly, which directly lead to the continuous reduction of ecological footprint per ten thousands GDP.(4) From 2002 to 2013, diversity indexes for Shaanxi province also shows a downwards trends, which indicates that the utilization strcture of land is becoming unbalance, the development strategy may need to change.
