Tap is the main tool to attack inside the thread, because the tapping is done in a closed space, which will cause the increase of friction, with a lot of cutting heat generation and unsmooth chip removal, heat generation cannot be taken in time, easy to make already processed surface of hard and brittle, which will affect the durability of the tap. Because of its excellent comprehensive properties, high speed steel has been widely used in the manufacture of various kinds of metal cutting tools in recent years. However, because of the different types of processed materials, mechanical properties of different materials are also different. Therefore, in order to get the optimum performance of the tapping in tapping, it is necessary to study for different geometric parameters and cutting process parameters of tap processing materials.In this paper, the tap is a tap M8 thread and the workpiece material used in the experiment is: 319 aluminum alloy, Cr12 steel, HT250. Through the use of metal cutting software Advant Edge FEM to simulate the process of tapping. In the experiment, the simulation test parameters are designed by the method of multi index orthogonal experiment design, experimental optimization factors of rank angle, cone angle, spindle speed. Experimental tapping performance evaluation index for maximum torque, maximum axial force and high cutting temperature, and the effects of different factors on different evaluation indexes were analyzed. The comprehensive score of tapping performance is obtained through the comprehensive evaluation method, the geometric parameters and process parameters to summarize the different factors impact on the performance of the trend of further optimization of tap tapping. The temperature distribution of cutting tool cutting area was studied and the relationship between tool wear and cutting temperature were studied. Finally, through the simulation of machining center tapping test, the cutting force and chip are verified.The optimal parameters of tap for different materials can be obtained through analysis, The optimal parameters for cutting aluminum alloy: the rank angle is 10 degrees, the cone angle is 8 degrees, the spindle speed is 900r/min. The optimal parameters for cutting Cr12 steel:the rank angle is 7 degrees, the cone angle is 4 degrees, the spindle speed is 250r/min. The optimal parameters for cutting HT250:the rank angle is 4 degrees, the cone angle is 7 degrees, the spindle speed is 300r/min.By comparing with the actual cutting test, the reliability of the 3D model has been verified, to provide a theoretical basis for the effect of temperature on the cutting tool life, it also provides data support for the future to determine the tapping process, tap geometric parameters and process parameters.
