Conventional grinding can not meet the current demands any more.The arrangement of abrasive grains on the surface of the conventional grinding wheel is random,and the protrusion height of abrasive grains is relatively poor.That leads to the poor capability of containing the chip,and it is not conductive to the penetration of cutting fluid in grinding zone and the dissipation of heat so that causes the burn of workpiece and short the service life of grinding wheel.Therefore,improving the grinding performance becomes a main research direction.In order to improve the grinding performance,it is necessary to arrange the abrasive grains on the surface of the grinding wheel and achieve equal protrusion height of abrasive grains.Higher cutting efficiency and better surface quality will be achieved by above method.Firstly,according to the theory of cylindrical abrasive grain arrangement,the mathematic model of ground roughness under different arrangement of abrasive grains was established by analyzing the interaction process between grinding wheel and workpiece.The surface roughness of the ground workpiece by different arrangement of the grinding wheel was simulated by software,and the three-dimensional topography of the workpiece surface under different grinding parameters is obtained.By comparing the simulation results,it can be concluded that the surface roughness of ground workpiece can be reduced by the grinding wheel with abrasive phyllotactic pattern.Secondly,the influence factors of the protrusion height of abrasive grains on the surface of the grinding wheel were analyzed.Firstly,abrasive grains were sorted and the size difference of the abrasive grains was reduced,then,the sorted grains were used to fabricate the grinding wheel.From the sample of grinding grains and data analysis,it can be concluded that the protrusion height of abrasive grains on the surface of grinding wheel are improved obviously.Finally,grinding experiments were carried out by using grinding wheels which have different abrasive arrangement and the equal protrusion height.Through the analysis,it can be seen that when the single factor changes,the grinding speed ns increases,the workpiece feed speed vw decreases,or grinding depth ap decreases,the surface roughness of the ground workpiece will be decreased.Meanwhile,under thesame grinding condition,the surface roughness of the wheel with grain phyllotatic pattern is better than the wheel with the staggered pattern,and the grinding wheel with the staggered pattern has an advantage over the grinding wheel with random distribution,and the wheel with equal protrusion height of abrasive grains can obtained better grinding surface roughness than ordinary wheel.
