Wood-plastic composites (WPC) is a new type of material prepared by mixing wood flour and plastic, which has the dual advantages of wood and plastic. However, the flammability of WPC limits its wider application. In this paper, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) based WPC were flame retarded by the following flame retardant system, such as aluminum phosphite (AHP); magnesium hydroxide (MH) mixed with ammonium polyphosphate (APP), zinc borate (ZB), nano-silica (Nano SiO2), silicone as synergist; hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) mixed with ZB. The main results are shown as follows:(1) With AHP as the flame retardant for HDPE based WPC, the flame retardant properties?mechanical properties?thermal stability and flame retardant mechanism were studied by means of mechanical properties, limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 vertical burning, cone calorimeter(CCT), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements . The results show that when the amount of AHP is 30wt%, the UL-94 level of the composites is V-0, the LOI is 25.5, and the flame retardant properties of the composites are greatly improved.(2) Using MH as flame retardant, and APP, ZB, nano SiO2, silicone as synergists for HDPE based WPC, the flame retardant properties, mechanical properties, thermal stability and flame retardant mechanism were researched by mechanical properties, LOI,UL-94 vertical burning, CCT, TGA and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) tests . The results show that nano-silica and ZB have obvious synergistic effect on MH flame-retardant HDPE based WPC.(3) Choosing HBCD as flame retardant, ZB as synergist for HDPE based WPC, the flame retardant properties, mechanical properties, thermal stability and flame retardant mechanism were investigated by mechanical properties, LOI, UL-94 vertical burning,CCT, TGA and SEM tests . The results show that the flame retardant properties of the composites increase with increasing amount of HBCD. When the mass ratio of ZB and HBCD is 1: 3, the composite system possesses the best flame retardant effect.
