Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene(UHMWPE)is widely used in various fields due to its excellent performance.Despite of many advantages,it also has shortcomings,such as the poor creep resistance and low thermal deformation temperature.Illite-smectite interstratified clay minerals(ISIC)as the superior resource in Guangxi,has many excellent performances,such as rubber reinforcement,grease lubrication and reduce mechanical wear,so it can prolong the service life of industrial products.So ISIC is applied to modify UHMWPE in this paper.The thermodynamics and mechanical property changes of the irradiated UHMWPE with ISIC was also investigated.The purpose is to improve its creep resistance and friction performance.In this paper,ISIC was modified with organic activator and the changes in its structure before and after modification was investigated by a variety of technical means.The results show that the interlayer spacing was significantly improved.After modification,the surface changed from being hydrophilic to being hydrophobic,and it dispersed in organic reagents more significantly.ISIC/UHMWPE composites were prepared via melt blending method.The tensile properties of the composites under different additive amount were investigated.It was found that the tensile properties were the largest under the low additive amount(1%)and its tensile strength was increased by 12%.The TQ DSC and friction performance analysis of the composites with additive amount of 0.75%was performed and the results showed that the thermal stability of composites with ISIC was increased and the crystallinity was increased from 45.43%(UHMWPE)to 53.26%(ISIC/UHMWPE).The friction coefficient and wear of composites were decreased.The composites were irradiated by the y-ray irradiation in the environment of air and N2,and the tensile property was decreased after irradiation,which was more significant in the air.The results showed that under the low additive amount,ISIC with the lamellar structure could reduce the diffusion rate of oxygen in the air atmosphere,thus reducing the splitting decomposition and promoting cross-linking,while the lamellar structure in the N2 atmosphere hindered it's cross-linking.The DSC shows that the crystallinity irradiated in air atmosphere is higher than that in the N2 atmosphere.The analysis of creep performance of composites after irradiation showed that the creep performance was increased.The friction performance analysis showed that the friction coefficient of M-ISIC/UHMWPE was the smallest both in the air and N2 atmosphere.After the irradiation,the wear of composites was reduced.Overall,the cross-linking and filling modification can help improve the creep resistance and friction performance.
