With the development of technology and science, more and more organic materials are widely used in people's daily life, which brings us much convenience. However, some security risks are gradually exposed too. PS is an organic material which is widely used in daily life, its thermal insulation properties and processing performance is very well, It play an important role in the field of building insulation. PS is very easy to burn, so it is very dangerous, how to improve the flame retardancy of PS has been cause for concern.Adding brominated flame retardant is a commonly used method to improve the flame retardancy of PS, this method is valid but it will produce toxic gases when the traditional brominated flame retardant burning, it is not environmentally friendly; halogen-free flame retardant has been continuously evolved, but the effect of flame retardancy between the halogen-free flame retardant and the brominated flame retardant still have obvious distance.The brominated styrene butadiene rubber is a kind of high molecular bromine flame retardant. The high molecular brominated flame retardant has good flame retardant effect and it has no toxic substances in the combustion process. Based on the principle of the dissolution in the similar material structure, brominated styrene butadiene rubber and polystyrene compatibility will compatibility well, and compared with traditional brominated polystyrene, styrene butadiene rubber structure has an addition reaction of double bond with Br, so its bromine content will be higher, and its flame retardant effect will be better.The preparation process of BSBR can refer to the preparation process of BPS. This reaction is carried out in the solution, using EDC as solvent, BrCl as bromide agent, SbCl3 as catalyst. We designed experiments to study the material selection, the best solvent dosage, the best concentrated hydrochloric acid dosage, the reaction temperature and the best dosage of brominating agent. We used FT-IR and GPC to see the difference of ESBR and SSBR., and used EDS to know the bromine content of product .Finally, the optimum experimental conditions are as follows: ESBR 5g ,EDC 100ml,SbCl3 3g, concentrated hydrochloric acid excess 30%, reaction temperature 45 ?, BrCl 70ml. According to the optimum process conditions, the brominated styrene butadiene rubber is light yellow solid, the bromine atom percentage is 33.17%, the yield is about 61.4%.In order to explore the brominated flame retardant properties of styrene butadiene rubber, we mixed the brominated styrene butadiene rubber and polystyrene in solution, designed experiments to adjust the position of bromine,the additional amount of BSBR and different bromine content of BSBR. We used TG, LOI and cone calorimeter toobserve the change of thermal properties and flame retardant properties.Flame retardant polystyrene with 30.8 % limiting oxygen index is obtained.
