C9 petroleum resin was the non-polar polymer from polymerization of the C9 fractions,which was the byproduct of ethylene cracking facilities.On the basis of summing up production status and modification methods at home and abroad,this paper introduced polar group to C9 resin by adding phenol as modifying agent and studied the application of the modified petroleum resin on epoxy resin.The modified petroleum resin is prepared by cationic polymerization using BF3?O?C2H5?2 as the catalyst and phenol as the modifying agent.The amount of modifying agent,catalyst and reaction time on performance indexes of modified resin were systemically studied.After optimizing the experimental conditions,the reaction conditions were fixed as below: the dosage of the phenol was 12%;the amount of catalyst was 0.6%;reaction time was 4.5h;reaction temperature was 050 ?.Following such reaction factors,the hydroxyl value of product could arrived at 96.8 mg KOH /g,the yield of the resin was more than 55%,soft points were between the 80100 ?,acid value and free phenol were less than 3 mg KOH /g and 0.6% respectively,which successfully meet the industrial requirements.Hydroxyl group was introduced into C9 petroleum resin molecular chain successfully based on the results of FTIR and 1H-NMR spectra.The thermal stability of the product was tested by TGA.The second part studies the application of the petroleum resin on epoxy resin.The phenolic hydroxyl group was transformed into epoxy group by two-step method.The best reaction conditions were determined by research as below: the molar ratio of phenolic hydroxyl group and epichlorohydrin was 1:8,etherification reaction time was 4.5 h,temperature was 80 ?;The dosage of ring-closure catalyst was 8%,temperature was 75 ?,ring-closure time was 2 h.Structures of the modified resin were analyzed according to results of characterization by IR and 1H-NMR.Using 4,4-diaminodiphenylmethane?DDM?as curing agent,studied the DSC curve of epoxy resin under different heating rate by adding different content of modified C9.The curing program has been established by the Kissnger and Crane models: 2 h under 100 ?,2 h under 135 ?,2 h under 175 ?.The properties of the epoxy resin,such as Impact performance,bending behavior,thermal stability,were systematically studied and discussed with the different addition amount of modified petroleum resin.The results showed that the combination of the epoxy petroleum resin and epoxy resin showed better mechanical properties than hydroxylate C9,and the addition of modified petroleum resin had a little influence on the thermal stability properties of the material.
