At the first step of this study, steel wool, granular activated carbon, steel wool mixed granular activated carbon were used as the anode packed electrode materials of MFC.Secondly, the best packed electrode material chosen in the first step was used to build a test platform to research. It was used to indicate how the electrode chamber physical and chemical parameters affected the MFC electrogenic characteristics and the resistant ability of anode electricigens to phenol and high salinity. In the starting-up experiment, steel wool mixed granular activated carbon material was used as cathode material and the cathode oxidizing agent was potassium permanganate. The inoculated sludge came from the anaerobic process of a white wine distillery in Xuzhou. The MFC device was operated in a sequence style which took 24 hours as a cycle. The result indicated that one of the MFCs was started up successfully by using steel wool as anode packed electrode after 24 hours. Its max external voltage was 0.5V and the max power density was 3197mW/m3.Considering the starting-up speed, power density and other electrogenic characteristics, the MFC using steel wool as anode packed electrode was the best among the three kinds of anode materials MFCs,because the steel wool has great specific area, excellent electrical conductivity and structure stability.Steel wool packed-bed anode MFC was used to research how the electrode chamber physical and chemical parameters affected the MFC electrogenic characteristics.Experiment results indicated that with the increasing of potassium permanganate concentration, the MFC electricity production ability increased. The best cathode pH value was 5.On the other hand, with the increase of water flowing circulation, the MFC power density increased and then decreased.Water flowing circulation could promote the mass transfer effect, but too much water flowing circulation could lead to oxidizing agent going into anode chamber which could decrease the electricity production ability. In addition, the experiment results showed that there was a limiting organic substrate concentration for electricity generation, and in this experiment the limiting concentration was 2700 mg/L.Besides,the most suitable pH of anode chamber was between 7 and 8.Steel wool packed-bed anode MFC was used to research the resistance ability to phenoland and salinity of anode electricigens.Experiment results indicated that the electricigens has a strong resistance to phenol. When the anode phenol concentration was up to 450mg/L,the electrogenic characteristics was restrained and the electrogenic characteristics would recover again in the next day when the catholyte was changed.Furthermore, the electricigens had a strong resistance to salinity.Only was the salinity up to 50g/L,the electrogenic characteristics was restrained. The electricity produce ability could be recovered after 24 hours when the salinity went back to a suitable concentration level.
