Illumination design is essential in indoor space. The evolution procedures of light have witnessed the history of Interior Design. From the natural light at the very beginning to the fire light created and used autonomously by men, and later to lamp lights of various forms and colors, human beings become increasingly mature in utilizing lights. Previously, what people ask from indoor illumination is a material condition for conducting visual operations. But, with the development of social economy and the rise of perceptual consumption, people begin to pay more attention to the non-material information delivered by the indoor illumination---the psychological and emotional experience. Emotional design is a "people-oriented" design concept, aiming to trigger men’s emotional response. In this paper, the emotional design concept is transplanted into indoor illumination design in order to meet the emotional needs of users in indoor space. Put the creation of a pleasant emotional experience of indoor environment as the goal of lighting design, the author recognizes and analyzes the emotional relation among users, indoor environment and illumination. And on this basis, the author illustrates the expressive modes of emotion in illumination designs and proposes the principles and methods for the emotional design of indoor illumination. Hope it can provide some references for current illumination design in both concepts and practices. In the specific research, first of all, this paper starts from the perspective of emotion and analyzes the basic concept, philosophical basis and the three levels of emotional design; Besides, the paper analyzes the procedures of people’s emotional experience in indoor environment, based on Maslow’s theory of human needs and emotional characteristics of illumination design, the model of indoor environment users’emotional needs hierarchy is established:practical level — visual aesthetic level — reflective level. And questionnaires are adopted for further confirmation and researches. And moreover, the paper analyzes design factors for illumination design to express emotions and the corresponding emotional connotation of the factors to discusses the principles and methods of emotional design for indoor illumination; Finally, according to conventional process of lighting design the author puts forward the illumination design threading that value users’emotional procedures and makes supporting analysis on the basis of personal practical cases.
