Concrete Faced Rockfill Dam(CFRD) is widely used in domestic and abroad,because of its excellent characteristics, such as the appropriate environment adaptability, the economic efficiency, and the reli ability for safety. However, with passage of the time, many concealed defects are gradually presented.CFRD is suffering from panel deformation, large cracks, and water seepage, and these potential threads affect their functionalities and may cause serious security incidents. Quick and effective structural monitoring and disease dections for the CFRD are urgent.Ground penetrating radar transmits electromagnetic waves through the interior of the detection object, according to the internal differences of diffe rent electromagnetic properties, to identify abnormal structures inside, separation, porosity and other features. Ground penetrating radar is very effective for detecting inner and potential diseases of CFRD.This paper focuses on CFRD's detection in the separation of deck from cushion problems, systemic analysis of the causes of the separation disaster and the viable methods for detecting. Concluded that Ground penetrating radar is the best way to detct the separation disaster of CFRD. According to GPR's electromagnetic theory and transporting medium's constitutive equation deduced the principles and detecting ways of GPR, the basis of parameter settings and the processing modes in this paper.Through the experimental detection of Baiyun Dam, to get the optimized ground penetrating radar detection methods for the CFRD's speration disease, standard speration disease images are derived from internal images of different depths detected by three different frequency antennas. The results were verified by core drilling in Baiyun Dam. Optimized ground penetrating radar detection methods are successfully applied for a serious seepage CFRD, and get detailed pictures of cushion diseases' distribution. Specific approaches based on analysis of these pictures are applied for speration diseases, and later samples and assessments are quite positive.Optimized ground penetrating radar detection methods provide a theoretical and practical experience for detecting and treating CFRD's speration diseases, which are important for CFRD working sustainablely and safetly.
