Reciprocating seal is the most common dynamic seal type in the hydraulic system, and its working state directly affects the working performance of the hydraulic system. The complex working environment of the hydraulic system easily leads to reciprocating seal failure, causing oil leakage and serious consequences. Traditional indirect monitoring methods of the reciprocating seal failure are based on leakage phenomenon because of sealing failure, which are difficult to identify the condition and take measures accurately and in time. Therefore, the research of a more timely and accurate monitoring method of hydraulic reciprocating seal failure is very important. From the above problem, the paper analyzes the failure modes of the reciprocating seal systematically and takes the hydraulic cylinder as the research object to study the monitoring method based on Fiber Bragg grating sensor. Main research results are as follows:(1) FMEA has been applied to analyze hydraulic reciprocating seal failure modes systematically and makes the main failure modes and risk level clear.(2)Based on the seal failure criteria, the monitoring method of hydraulic reciprocating seal failure is studied. Paper applies the finite element analysis tool and experiment study of pre-compression to compare the seal surface strain in normal state and failure state, which verifies the feasibility of using Fibber Bragg Sensor as the monitoring method.(3) The hydraulic cylinder piston rod has been taken as the example, and the hydraulic reciprocating seal monitoring experiment scheme was designed. Then the experiment research of normal and wear seal working in different pressure and data collecting is carried out. The comparison of contact strain and power spectrum analysis of strain signal proves the validity of the monitoring method based on the Fiber Bragg grating sensor.
