Auxiliary brake is a sort of braking device that is paralleled arranged with the conventional main brake(or service brake). The auxiliary brake could provide the required braking torque as well as prevent the friction brake from overheated, so that it could guarantee the safety performance of vehicles. Hence, it enjoys a significant status to develop a sort of auxiliary brake, which is more reliable, much cheaper, and eco-friendly.This thesis firstly analyzed the necessity of developing auxiliary brake from the view of policies and technology as well as reviewing its development. The previous works indicated that the eddy current retarder is a sort of technical route that suits China's national condition whereas several bottlenecks resist the eddy current retarder's development especially for its torque recession and energy consumption. Hence, this thesis proposed the conception of the Energy Recuperative Eddy Current Retarder(ERECR). The research works mainly concentrated on enhancing the torque generating property by combining the braking torque from eddy current brake unit(ECBU) and regenerative brake unit(RGBU), enhancing valid working period through cutting down the ECBU's braking load and enhancing vehicles' overall energy efficiency through kinetic energy harvesting and its utilization. These works were supported by the Wuhan Dawn Plan Funding for Young Scientist and Engineers(No. 2013072304010830). This thesis firstly presents the fundamental studies on eddy current brake and regenerative brake. Throughout the theoretical study, the mathematical model of ECBU and RGBU are derivate followed by the analysis of influence on ECBU's torque stability and the solving of the eigenvalue of RGBU. Then, the thesis proposed a design plan and structure design methodology for the ERECR based on property of eddy current brake and regenerative brake. Finally, the thesis present a design sample on product prototype structure design and the design of a principle prototype, meanwhile, the simulation research on the product prototype and experimental research on principle prototype are reported.The main contributions of this thesis are: ? A developed simplified mathematical model of eddy current brake was derivate, and the sensitivity analysis on the influence of eddy current brake's torque generation stability was present. ?The theoretical model of RGBU based on the permanent magnet synchronous motor was introduced, and the eigenvalue that affect the behavior of the RGBU was discussed. ?The ERECR's design plan and structure design methodology were proposed based on the property of eddy current brake and regenerative brake, and their feasibility were analyzed through simulation and experimental study.
