The bulk-cargo stacker is a common and important machine in the process of loading and unloading of bulk cargo. There are various kinds of bulk-cargo stacker existing in the market, but the application of each kind of bulk-cargo stacker is often limited to a certain circumstances. In view of some stock yards are demanding more requirements of stacking machine, such as stock yards with multiple cargos and multiple owners, demanding the stacking machine to load the bulk cargo directly from dump truck, to cover a smaller area, with good maneuverability, with simpler structure and so on, a new type of stacker should be designed to meet the needs of customers.Based on the requirements above, scholars in WuHan University of Technology have been designing a new type of stacker- chain bucket stacker. The working process of the chain bucket stacker is: the dump truck unloads the bulk cargo directly into the chain bucket mechanism, the chain buckets scoop the material in the horizontal direction and then lift the material to a certain height and unload it to spiral transit mechanism, the spiral transit mechanism assembles the material and unload it to cantilever belt conveyor to do the stockpiling work.The process of the chain bucket scooping material horizontally is mainly researched in this paper. The various designing parameters of the chain bucket mechanism influences the reclaiming capacity, the productivity of the machine, and the force working onto the chain bucket in the process of scooping material, the relationship of the influence is analyzed. The main designing parameters of the chain bucket mechanism includes the shape parameters of the bucket(the amplitude of the bucket, the depth of the bucket, the tilt angle of the bucket front opening), the distance between the buckets, and the speed of the buckets. Based on granule mechanics and classic mechanics, physical model and mechanical model are established to analyze the filling quantity of the bucket and the excavating resistance, and also the bending resistance of the chain and the instantaneous loading amount of the bucket. The analysis led to corresponding calculation formulas, thus analyzed the influences that the parameters have in the process of scooping material.The simulation software EDEM has been used to simulate the working process of the bucket under different parameters, and the analysis data like mass flow rate of materials, the filling amount of material in the bucket, the force of the bucket and so on are used to analyze the influence that the parameters have in the working process, thus to verify the the theoretical analysis that has been studied to a certain extent.By the theoretical analysis, MATLAB simulation, and EDEM simulation, a more comprehensive study of the influence between the shape parameters of the bucket, the distance between the buckets, the speed of the buckets and the material filling rate, the moving resistance, the instantaneous loading amount of the bucket, thus providing certain theoretical support and basis to the design of chain bucket parameters and improving the reasonability and reliability of the design work.
