In the paper, gravity heat pipe that wall was glass has been researched to figure out the heat-transfer performance of glass heat pipe under different experimental conditions, and applied to the field of LED heat dissipation to form LED- gravity heat pipe cooling system.In addition, this system has been implemented a series of optimization. The main work and conclusions are as follows:Firstly, this paper introduced the base theory of gravity heat pipe, and made a design of gravity heat pipe. The contents mainly include selection and calculation of wall material,the working medium, structure, etc, and calculation of strength, dryout limit, entrainment limit and boiling limit; in addition, theoretical analysis and calculation of the internal thermal resistance and external thermal resistance of the heat pipe based on heat pipe thermal resistance net.Secondly, this text designed the manufacture process of the gravity heat pipe in detail,include gross heat pipe processing, chemical cleaning, leak detection, liquid filling and filling, sealing, etc, and the establishment of a gravity heat pipe filling systems and inspection systems. The designed gravity heat pipe was got in accordance with the above manufactured process, and made the test performance with the use of constant temperature water-bath water.Furthermore, an experimental test platform was set up to study the gravity heat pipe transient performance, steady performance, thermal resistance and other effects of different thermal loads, dip, cooling style, etc. The results show that start time of gravity heat pipe is about 300 s, the thermal resistance is about 10K/ W, whose values are affected by the above parameters to some extent.Finally, according to the cooling process LED--gravity heat pipe system, the optimization was made to internal and external thermal resistance of the heat pipe, includeimprovements of wall material, wall thickness, gravity heat pipe length and structure, LED packages, ect, the results show that these parameters are varying degrees of improvements to improve the heat dissipation effect of the system, internal thermal resistance can be reduced to 3K/W.
