China consume approximately 50,000 metric ton annually of super clean XLPE compound for purpose of manufacturing HV/EHV power cable.However, the source of this material is limited to only two manufactures, Dow Chemical and Borealis. Therefore, the ability to manufacture this compound material domestically will stand to benefit both socially and economically.Impurity is the most important factor affecting the purity level necessary for super clean compound material. The inability to produce the compound domestically is mainly due lack of equipment to detect impurity at required level.This article introduces several latest equipment options to serve as base for the thesis.Base resin is main component in producing insulation compound for HV/EHV cable application. Consequently, selecting the right base resin is the key to HV/EHV cable insulation compound development. In this paper, two base materials were analyzed based on their physical, rheological, and electrical property as well as impurity level as part of the study. The base material 1 was select as the most suitable base resin for the research study as result of the analysis. Due to confidentiality agreement, the base resin used in the study is as1 and 2. In this study, the resulting research of cross-link polyethylene insulation compound formulation based on resin 1 was able to meet the entire requirement for HV/EHV application. It performs favorably in all areas including physical, electrical, rheological properties, and impurity level against product from foreign manufactures. Based on the comparison we can conclude the new formulation has achieved same level of performance standard set by foreign suppliers.This paper focuses on the production control process to prevent from impurity introduce into compound mixture. From preproduction to finalpackaging, proper procedures and attention to details are needed in every stage of manufacturing process to ensure quality consistency of final product in the true super clean sense. Each process is discussed in detail in the paper.Performance of extruded cable using new insulation formulation was compared against cable made to exact specification using industry standard insulation compound. The data from PD and for all cables were nearly identical demonstrating the quality and performance of new insulation formula is on par with competitions and meeting all standard requirements.
