In electrical power system, the electrical equipment has its own normal operating conditions. Once the conditions are changed or destroyed, it will threaten the safety and reliability of power production. Some electrical equipments are long to be in a circumstance of higher temperature and voltage, and tend to arise corrosion and cracks due to a variety of reasons, which can easily lead to internal faults of these electrical equipments, thus, causing security hazards. However, Infrared thermal imaging detection technology has the characteristics of non-contact and high sensitivity, which is playing an increasingly important role in non-destructive detection. Meanwhile, it has a greater advantage than ultrasonic wave in measuring temperature.This paper analyzes and summarizes the relevant definitions, theorems and formulas on infrared thermal imaging, proposing the fault diagnosis principles of electrical equipments in substation. It also analyzes the application scope for different infrared thermal imagers to different electrical equipments, and introduces the main fault characteristics and diagnosis principlesof electrical equipments in substation on the basis of different fault principles for different electrical equipments. Combining with his own working experience in Yingkou Electric Power Company, the writer has studied the methods of application and operating skills of infrared thermal imager and successfully applied them to electrical equipments in the actual production process. By making use of the obvious advantage of infrared temperature measuring technology in diagnosing-substation equipments'heating defects, the paper can set up management regulations of infrared diagnosis for substation equipments, and depending on its actual production needs, it also can determine infrared diagnosis cycle, and compile map library of infrared defect for substation equipments so as to improve the accuracy and efficiency of fault diagnosis.With the continuous improvement and popularization of infrared thermal imaging technology in our country, it will play a crucial role in real-time monitoring of the substation electrical equipments. Especially with the rapid development of computer technology, advanced infrared thermal imager can exchange and transmit data information with computer through the internet in real time. By making full use of the computer advantages in picture acquisition, processing, display, and storage, as well as the use of knowledge base to make an intelligent analysis to data as temperature, the infrared thermal imaging technology will have a great breakthrough in monitoring substation electrical equipments and play a more significant role in other fields.
