At present and even a long period henceforth, the high-power AC drive electric locomotives will keep playing the lead role in the passenger and freight transport on main line railways of China. As the requirement of the national railway company and all the operating railway administrations for the localization level of the high-power AC drive electric locomotives and their key and core components is increasing, on the basis of introduction, digestion, absorption and re-innovation of the relative core technologies during the past years, many key and core components have been localized and the overall localization ratio of the electric locomotives has been improved rapidly. The target of this research project is to develop the input/output unit which is the core component of the network control system of the high-power AC drive electric locomotive and to organize and accomplish the relative routine and type tests so as to lay a solid foundation for the final realization of 100% localization of the network control system of the high-power AC drive electric locomotive.The input/output unit designed in this article can realize the data collection and output functions such as collection of digital signals, output of digital signals, collection of analog signals and collection of temperatures. This article mainly consists of general design of the input/output unit, design of communication and establishment of internal communication protocol. It presents in detail the design of hardware structures including back plane board of crate, power supply board, Ethernet switch, protocol conversion board, digital collection board, digital output board, analog collection board and temperature collection board. At the same time, the system tests on the input/output unit have been performed and the relative course and conclusion of the tests are described in detail.
