As a modern electric power network, the smart grid has features of information-oriented, automotive and interactive. Smart substation automation system uses advanced intelligent devices to achieve information sharing and functional integration. To realize the basic functions such as information collection, measurement, protection, monitoring and others, the substation automation system integrates secondary systems through integrated-service platform, which supports a range of advanced applications.The automatic control system and the visualization platform, which are based on the information sharing mechanism and a unified communication standard of IEC61850, have been designed in this paper. According to reliable, integrated and economic principles, it optimizes network mode and device configuration and makes device configuration more reasonable, secondary systems more integrated, finally shows through visualization platform. Specific work includes:(1) Networking mode of smart substations. Aiming at meeting transmission requirements of communications network for all kinds of information, “three-two-network” and “three-one-network” have been compared on technical and economic ground. New generation smart substations are supposed to be designed succinct, while meeting reliability.(2) Device integration of smart substations. Aiming at optimizing and integrating secondary systems, the device integration schemes of the station layer, the bay level and the process level have been designed separately. It is supposed to simplify station layer device configuration through integrating the fault information substation and the five prevention system into a platform. Integrated designs of the multifunctional measurement &control device, the merging unit and the intelligent terminal make it more convenient to realize the advanced applications of the platform, while meeting requirements of "environmental protection, function integration, configuration optimization and technology class".(3) Design for relay protection of smart substation. Aiming at protecting the automatic control system, the rational distribution of protection has been discussed according to local protection requirements of the new generation smart substations. Substation-area protection has been top designed to make comprehensive protection decision, security and stability control of the automatic control system.(4) Design of visualization platform. Aiming at structural characteristics and business integration needs of the platform, functions of secondary systems have been designed. Modules of protection, measurement &control and monitoring have been integrated into the platform. Integrated-service platform, including advanced applications of sequential control, faults record, network message record and intelligent alarm, have been designed to meet the target of “horizontal and vertical integrated information” of the power grid.(5) Combined with the actual substation,the feasibility of the scheme has been texted, including the grid structure, the integrated-service platform and advanced applications of the new generation smart substation.
