As an effective organization form of distributed generators, microgrid can not only take full advantage of the distributed generation technology on resource conservation and environmental protection, but also effectively solve the technical and management problems. This paper focuses on the issues related to the energy management and optimal design,and the main work is as follows:(1) Taking both the variability of system composition and the complexity of energy flow into consideration, the quasi-steady state models of wind turbine, solar array, diesel generator, battery and power electronics are presented, which lays a theory foundation for the following chapters.(2) An optimal dispatching model with grid structure considered is constructed to minimize the operational cost of an isolated microgrid, which consists of diesel generator, wind turbines, and battery energy storage system. The curtailment factors for wind power, the generator bus voltages, the charge/discharge active power of batteries and the reactive compensation power of the power conversion system(PCS) are chosen as the optimization variables, and the genetic algorithm with power flow considered is adopted to solve the scheduling model. This model not only provides the optimal dispatching method of an isolated microgrid with the grid structure considered, but also analyzes the effects of different energy storage system capacity and location on operation cost, system loss and wind power penetration rate.(3) Based on the analysis of the significance and technical features of isolated microgrid in island, the planning and design methods of the microgrid are mainly introduced. Taking Dawanshan isolated microgrid for example, the load following operation strategy and cycle charge operation strategy are used to get the corresponding configurations respectively, and the economic and technical characteristics are also analyzed. At the same time, in order to satisfy the requirement of the internal rate of return and years of investment recovery, different subsidy levels of various subsidy forms are given, in order to maintain the normal operation of the project. Finally, the business models and policy suggestions for the development of isolated microgrid in island are proposed.
