Research On Planning Strategies For Garden City Of Our Country In Perspective Of Urban Design

Since Garden City was first proposed by E. Howard in 1898, it has became the the main development objective for most cities in the world, for which have conducted continuous innovation practices. And the "International Garden City" contest which was co-sponsored by the United Nations Environment Programme and the International Park Association since 1997, has become the major push hands for China's full swing Garden City Construction in the 21 st century.Given the current specific national conditions of China's huge population scale and scarce land resources, E. Howard's Garden City theory about population density, urban greening and road density can not actually guide our present garden city construction. Whereas, these indicators which directly affect the urban space layout are important aspects for controlling Garden City's the land use and space form design. Urban design also plays an important role in urban space control form and the overall space image features shaping. Thus, it is necessary to apply urban design theory to explore the indicators which are adaptive for our Garden City's featured spatial form and land use methods, and then come to the planning strategy for guiding the spatial layout of the garden cities in our country.First, on the basis of systematic study and summary on the development of garden city theory and the selection criteria of the ‘International Garden City', the article derived our garden city's connotation in basic characteristics, construction elements and space quality, and thus, getting the basic principles and the core idea for garden city construction in theory.Secondly, through the study and induction of urban design's basic theory and design methods, it is clear that urban design is of great importance for shaping Garden City's spatial morphology characteristics. Then the article defines the core contents of Garden City construction in perspective of urban design with connection to it's basic connotation, which are also the focus contents in the article.Then, through the comparison and selection of domestic and international garden cities' related indicators and construction strategy, the article proposes the appropriate indicators and planning strategies for garden city design from four important aspects of the modest population scale, development intensity control, reasonable road layout and urban landscape shaping. Which discusses the methods and strategies in both qualitative and quantitative aspects.Finally, the article takes Goushan plate Garden City design, in Zhoushan Islands District as a case study, appling theory and research to guide specific practice, to explain the reliability and practicality of this paper.
