With the development of port and shipping, many new requirements are made on construction and management of port accompanied with the efficiency and throughput growth. Properly determining the number of terminal gate lanes and capacity of terminal yard is helpful for saving the resource of land and equipment, as well as improving the efficiency of production and operation in the port. In previous studies, the number of terminal gate lanes and capacity of terminal yard are calculated separately. The coordinated relationship between them has been ignored. This paper builds coordinate discrete-simulation of terminal yard and gate system for storage and transport, calculate the proper scale of yard and gate, and discuss the relationship. Then, it also calculates out the best scale group with simulation-based model.This paper makes a literature review about terminal gate, yard and simulation-based optimization. Then, it introduces the working process of terminal gate and yard based on actual port operation system.In order to analyze the coordinated relationship between the number of terminal gate lanes and capacity of terminal yard, discrete-simulation of terminal yard and gate system for storage and transport is built restricted by max waiting time in the queue instantaneous utilization of terminal gate. Then, simulation-based optimal model is built with an objective of minimizing the total cost of three part:depreciable cost of gate lane, depreciable cost of gate lane and waiting cost of trucks.Finally, this paper takes a port as an example. It calculate out the range of gate lane number and yard capacity, and analyzes their relationship. Then, the best scale group is calculated using the simulation-based optimal model and sensitivity analysis about ship arrival interval time and gate service time is made. The conclusion is:Firstly, the number of terminal gate lanes and capacity of terminal yard has proper ranges, with the increase of yard capacity, gate lane number could be decreased appropriately. Secondly, simulation-based optimal model is available for getting the best scale group. Finally, sensitivity analysis shows: ship arrival interval time have influence on the group:the less ship arrival interval time, the more significant influence on demand of terminal gate lane and terminal yard capacity, besides, the demand of terminal gate lane is constant within some certain ranges.
