Urban road traffic network is a special complex network, and cascading failure is an important feature. It has theoretical and practical significance to establish cascading failure model of urban road traffic network, to explore the prevention and control measures of cascading failure, to improve the security and reliability of the urban road traffic network's operation.In this paper, we study cascading failure prevention strategy of the urban road traffic network. It can prevent cascading failure happening through the study of the expansion of important sections and nodes. In this work, the main research work is as follows:(1) The research of incidental sections'or nodes'identification model based on the cascading failure. On the basis of the characteristics of the important sections (nodes), those sections (nodes) can be divided into conventional and incidental key sections (nodes). Based on removing method, we propose identification method of incidental key sections (nodes) by considering the cascading failure of important sections (nodes). If the consequence caused by the cascading failure becomes more serious when the edges (nodes) are removed, it illustrates that the edges (nodes) are more important. Then, we can effectively select incidental key sections (nodes).(2)The strategy of important sections'and nodes'expansion based on cascading failure. This paper has solved two key problems for capacity expansion strategies. One is the selection of sections and nodes needing to be expanded. The other is the optimization of sections'and nodes'expansion of capacity. First of all, which important sections (nodes) should be expanded must be determined. Then, it can obtain the final selection of expansion of the important sections (nodes) and the best expansion ratio on the basis of the testing in terms of expansion capacity and the effect of expansion. Moreover, we provide a specific algorithm and process whose effectiveness is demonstrated in the paper by means of experimental analysis.(3) The joint strategy of expansion considering the cascading failure of intersections combined with sections. The road traffic network is connected by roads and intersections. It often can not effectively improve the road network capacity (or improve the performance of resistance to cascading failure) when we only consider the strategy of a single intersection's capacity expansion, or a separate section's expansion. Therefore, the joint strategy of expansion considering the intersections combined with sections is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the whole unit set in need of expansion should be selected. Then, we can calculate the expansion capacity respectively for the sections and nodes of the whole unit set in order to obtain overall expansion capacity. And the minimum expansion capacity is considered as the best overall expansion unit whose capacity is called the best expansion capacity.
