The application of infrared monitoring system in power system can realize real-time monitoring of power equipment operation, and it greatly improves the reliability of power system operation. Traditional preventive test requires a lot of manpower, material resources, and the effect is not obvious. The infrared monitoring of a power system can make up for the inadequacy of traditional preventive test, therefore it can better adapt to the development of national economy, and produce a great economic and social benefits.In the purpose of power system reliable operation this paper compared the infrared monitoring with the traditional electric power equipment maintenance methods, and first proposed the practical significance of infrared monitoring system applied in the power system. Secondly, this paper introduced the basic characteristics of infrared, and by radiation coefficient concept applied the four law that applied to blackbody to the actual object, Analysis the relationship between the infrared and electric equipment fault diagnosis technology is analysied, and introduces the influence factor and countermeasure of infrared diagnosis technology and infrared temperature measurement technology. Thirdly, the software and hardware of River substation infrared monitoring system is designed and the external and internal fault of IR spectra of electrical apparatus is analysed.Finally this paper through the actual case of Yellow River station in Inner Mongolia proves that the infrared monitoring system plays an important part in power system operation.
