The use of asphalt concrete core wall as a seepage-control system for local material dam through a series of construction and development in the world, has become a dam type with very good application prospects of. It has a certain degree of strength, good adaptability to deformation, low permeability, erosion resistance and aging resistance abilities, and can be used in any harsh environment and at any altitude. A large number of engineering practice shows that this kind of dam type has good easy construction property and stability, and can be widely used, but so far, each project must spend a lot of time for the ratio test, and the dam design evaluation and construction are empirical, thus limiting the development of this dam type.The asphalt concrete core wall is investigated by means of finite element software using different construction methods for its stress and strain rules, which for the future engineering design has important significance. The main conclusions of this paper are as follows:1.The physical and mechanical properties of concrete and roller compacted asphalt concrete at home and abroad is summarized. Practice has proved that the application of engineering properties of these indicators is good, and when the projects are of a small scale, it is not necessary to do the ratio test and directly select the index of similar projects for the project construction to reduce the time and cost.2.Through numerical simulation, the paper comparative studied pouring and roller compacted asphalt concrete how to affect the stress-strain characteristics of clay core wall;Meanwhile, studied the influences of interaction between the dam shell materials and clay core wall to the stress-strain characteristics of clay core wall. Results showed that, with the same dam shell filling material, the stress-strain characteristics of the dam and asphalt concrete core wall were basically the same when clay core wall respectively used pouring or roller compacted asphalt concrete. with the same asphalt concrete materials of clay core wall, the stress-strain characteristics of the dam had very big difference by using different dam shell materials,and it was obviously controlled by the characteristics of the dam shell materials?which indicated asphalt concrete clay core wall wasnot the stress components but the anti-seepage body. What type of asphalt concrete didnot affect the stress-strain characteristics of clay core wall. and also showed that, using pouring and roller compacted asphalt concreten was the same,all could build high asphalt concrete core wall dam.3.Through the research of the interaction of asphalt concrete core wall and the intermediate layers by the finite element analysis, it was clear that the structure's scale of transitional layers and the material properties affected the stress-strain characteristics of core wall?Results showed that,single or double transition layer,their property and geometrical dimension had no great influence on the property of asphalt concrete core wall,so we could simplify the structure of transition layer,and provided the quantificational design basis for the design of transition layer.4.The paper provided a design solution of modular asphalt concrete core wall dam, the differences were compared with the stress-strain characteristics of pouring and roller compacted asphalt concrete by the finite element analysis. The result showed that the design solution of modular asphalt concrete core wall was feasible. the design solution of dam type is safe and reliable,and can provide the quick and economical construction.
