The invention of the internal combustion engine promotes the progress of human society, it brings convenience to people, but it also consumes a lot of fuel and it produces pollution which can not be ignored. Shortage of petroleum and a wide range of severe haze in China in the past two years has attracted serious concerns. Less emissions and more energy-efficient operation have become tireless pursuit of researchers who are engaged in internal combustion engine. The rapid development of computer technology has been meeting people's hope of fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly vehicles. Before the computer is not used universally, the parameter selection of the internal combustion engine is only estimated, and the selection is based on the experience of old engineers. However, this simple, rough selection is unable to meet people's demand on engine performance now. Using GT-power software to simulate the working process of internal combustion engine in order to improve the performance of the original turbocharged diesel engine, obtaining a higher power and less emissions without a large structural changes. In this paper, GT-power software is used to build a model of the turbocharged diesel engine, then using this model to simulate the actual work of the turbocharged diesel engine. Comparing the simulation results with the test results and verifying the accuracy of this simulation model. Using this model to simulate the speed characteristics and load characteristics of the original turbocharged diesel engine in order to master the basic performance characteristics. Changing compression ratio of the original machine, analyzing the variety of this diesel engine's performance accordingly, and getting the best value of compression ratio. Optimizing the exhaust and intake advance angle is the main way to optimize the valve timing of the turbocharged diesel engine. Analyzing the changes of volumetric efficiency, power, torque and fuel consumption after the exhaust and intake advance angle have been changed, in order to select the optimal valve timing. Increasing or decreasing the intake and exhaust valve lift proportionally based on intake and exhaust valve lift of the original turbocharged diesel engine to analyze the changes of exhaust emissions and performance followed, then optimizing intake and exhaust valve lift to reduce the exhaust emissions. Changing the length of intake manifold of the original turbocharged diesel engine, analyzing the propagation characteristics of pressure wave in the pipe with different intake pipe lengths and then optimizing the intake manifold length to use the resonance effect better. Using Matlab programming to optimize the matching of turbocharger and diesel engine and improve the fit between the turbocharger and diesel engine.
