Automobile has become an important part of people's life. However, with the rapid increase of automobile number in China, it brings us a huge crisis of energy and environment. How to save energy and reduce emission is the key to solve this problem. In this work, the public traffic vehicles are studied from improving diesel engine matching performance and reducing accessory energy consumption for seeking an effective way to reduce fuel consumption of automobile. The major research work is as follows:(1) The road spectrum of public traffic vehicles in the city and the suburbs was collected, then the fuel consumption, speed and throttle opening degree of diesel engine was analyzed, it was found that the engine mainly works at the condition of low and medium speed and load.(2) A small inertia turbocharger was employed in the diesel engine. It was found that the small inertia turbocharger decreased the fuel consumption of the diesel engine at low and medium speed and load. With the thermal balance calculation of diesel engine in the vehicle and the comparison of power consumption of the diesel engine accessories, especially, power consumption of direct fan, electronic silicone oil fan and electromagnetic fan was compared, it was found that an electromagnetic fan not only met the requirements of the vehicle thermal balance, but also effectively reduced the power consumption of the diesel engine accessories. As a result, the fuel consumption of diesel engine decreased and the cooling system of diesel engine was effectively managed at the optimal heat load.(3) Various turbochargers and fans were adopted in the diesel engine and experiments were carried out. The experimental results showed that when a small inertia turbocharger and an electromagnetic fan were adopted, vehicles can save 3-5% of fuel consumption than before.
