Fort as one of the important architectural styles, has left a considerable trace on architectural history of human beings. As a significant branch of global architectural system, ancient Indian architecture has bequeathed India thousands of rigorously-designed and compactedly-distributed forts in its long and prosperous development. These forts fits in subtly with the terrace, suits their own design to the local conditions and takes advantage of mountains, rivers, deserts and forests as their natural barriers, which altogether with the manually-constructed magnificent defense structures form a formidable and majestic defense system and reveals high level of military attainments. However, plenty of palaces, gardens and markets exists inside the fort wall. Forts not only stands as the eminent representative of ancient Indian architectural art, but also provides precious research materials for Indian history, culture, architecture and arts.This paper, with its title "The Study on Forts of India", identifies the Indian forts with independent defense system as its research object. Through numerous on-site investigations and research as well as books, literature, photos, architectural drawings and other corresponding materials, the paper gives an brief introduction on forts development and probes into its location and distribution, defense structures, solo unit with the forts and other corresponding architectural features and supplements the results with analysis of typical examples.This paper contains seven chapters. The first chapter, as the introduction, analyzes the project source of this paper, identifies the research object, content, aim and significance, summarizes the related research at home and abroad and expounds on the overall research methods and framework. The second chapter follows a chronological order and elaborates on the alternations of dynasties and historical background relating to the forts, which lies a solid foundation for the research on architectural features on Indian forts. The third chapter serves as a brief introduction to Indian forts, including the change of forts, architectural characteristics, the relationship between forts and city development, city construction theory and its comparison with the city construction theory of ancient China; The fourth chapter majorly summarizes the features of the selection of location of Indian forts and its distribution patterns in detail from the perspective of building complex.The fifth chapter thoroughly analyzes architectural features of major defense structures and its corresponding architectural technology and art. The sixth chapter defines a systematic category for the solo units within the Indian forts and renders a brief analysis. The seventh chapter concludes the architectural features of Indian forts and points out the innovative points and deficiencies of this paper. The Forth chapter and the fifth chapter are two main chapters among all the seven chapters.
