The development of military stronghold came from prehistoric defensive settlement in China, relying on the city had been as the main defensive model early in time of war. As the development of war, besides building the city to defend, connected cities had developed the linear fortifications gradually, this is Great Wall. Until Ming Dynasty, the fortifications which included the Great Wall along with the military fort, beacon towers, piers and pass had developed a Great depth defense system.Building Great Wall in the border areas dates from Han Dynasty of China; this was made the necessary strategy by the ancient monarch. However Great Wall did not be constructed in Song Dynasty of China, and they changed the defensive strategy in the border areas. Especially the confrontation period of the Song Dynasty and Xixia Dynasty, Song Dynasty using " Castle Strategy”vied with Xixia Dynasty for the Hengshan territory and becoming a defensive system,Song Dynasty relied on the Strategy to obtain more territory in the period. Therefore the fortifications of " Castle Strategy”can match with Great Wall. There are great differences of building military fort for site, construction method, functions between Song Dynasty and Ming Dynasty, especially during the Ming Dynasty, there are the connection of time and space between Great Wall line construction and military fort, and it added great difficulty in site selection of military fort for Song Dynasty and Ming Dynasty. At the end of the war,the military fort did not disappear completely, because relying on its location factors and good traffic location and distribution properties evolved into the economy and political center gradually, and it brought the huge influence and development for towns in the northern of Shaanxi Province..Therefore,this paper will analyze and compare forts in the northern of Shanxi Province during the period between Song Dynasty and Ming Dynasty by the collection of historical materials, field trips. Analyzing the historical forming process of the military fort and Great Wall, summarizing the spatial distribution and its variation, defensive characteristics between Song Dynasty and Ming Dynasty, the relationships of military fort and topographic, other factors and its impact, walled city scale and its internal structure to understand deeply for fort. There have been many points in the former fort of the Great Wall and the army fort research between Song Dynasty and the Ming Dynasty. Therefore, this paper will analyze and compare two dynasties on the basis of previous research to summarize my points and conclusion.
