Ethanol is oxygenated fuel which with good performance. When ethanol used for additive of engine fuel, it can partly relive the problem of lacking oil resource in our country, besides it also play a positive role on reducing engine emission. In order to study the impact of ethanol on diesel engine performance and emission, we conduct a test on YC6J180 diesel engine. 0# diesel is used as the basic fuel in this test, prepare ethanol-diesel mixture fuel with 10% and 20% ethanol proportion(mark E10 and E20 respectively, the pure diesel marked E0). Perform test with pure diesel and each kind of ethanol-diesel mixture fuel respectively without changing any engine construction or parameters. The purpose is to research the impact on engine dynamics, economical efficiency and emission performance. Analyze the test data and summarize the conclusion as below:1. Drive engine with E0, E10, E20 mixture fuel, the engine torque output decrease when increasing the ethanol percentage, and fuel consumption increase, it's because of the less carbon element in ethanol, and the calorific value of ethanol is lower2. The exhaust temperature, smoke decrease obviously when driving engine with ethanol-diesel fuel, it's because the ethanol can evaporate by absorbing the heat of duct and hot parts around the combustion chamber, furthermore, ethanol can increase the oxygen content in combustion chamber and it's helpful for the combustion process3. When drive engine with ethanol-diesel fuel, the HC and CO emission is lower than using pure diesel. It's because the oxygen content increase and oxygen uniformity is better after adding ethanol, it's helpful to decrease HC and CO emission.4. The NOx emission increase when increasing ethanol percentage, it's because oxygen content increase after adding ethanol, it provide rich oxygen environment for combustion process and cause high NOx emission.5. Comparing with pure diesel, the quantity of unconventional pollution is higher when using ethanol-diesel mixture fuel. The influence on carbonyl group pollution is different when driving engine at different operation conditions. That's because the carbonyl group emission is closely related to engine combustion situation. The impact on combustion is different when driving engine at different speed and different load.
