As a major public transportation mode, bus has a series of advantages including large capacity, high transport efficiency, and low pollution, playing a very important role in the urban passenger transport systems of China and many other countries. However, the current operation of buses is still suffering from problems of long travel time and low punctuality rate, and the improved means are relatively rare, researching on bus signal priority control strategies has high practical meanings. Based on the existing bus signal priority control methods both domestically and internationally, the Qianjin Road in Kunshan City was selected as the research sites, and different signal priority control methsods were evaluated using real-world traffic flow data and bus operation data in this dissertation. In terms of bus signal priority control methods, three types of effective methods including passive priority, active priority, and adaptive priority were mainly studied. Based on the analysis on the principles and logics of different methods and the actual traffic condition in Qianjin Road, the impacts of different bus signal priority control methods was evaluated under different traffic conditions, considering both bus and passenger cars, the applicability of different bus signal priority control methods were also discussed. For the bus signal priority control strategies, bus signal priority control schemes were determined based on the performance of different bus signal priority control methods. With the objectives to minimize the effects of bus signal priority control on the passenger cars and reduce the bus delay, the performances of different schemes were compared to current field-implemented signal plans and evaluated in simulation envirioment, and the optimal schemes were determined. The results showed the proposed schemes effectively reduced the bus delay without causing significant negative effects on signalized intersections.
