Steel cables as load-bearing parts are widely used in various engineering fields. Once there is a problem with the health of steel cables, it may cause a huge accident. Therefore, the measurement of cable force has great significance. Currently, although there are many ways of measuring the cable force, but for measurement of cables in service, these methods all have some inevitable shortcomings. In this paper, a detection system applied to the measurement of cable force based on Cortex-A8 is represented. An externally mounted cable stress detection sensor based on magneto-elastic effect is used in this paper with which the shortcomings of conventional methods can be overcome.Firstly, the mechanism of outside-mounted cable tension sensor is introduced and the effect of choosing different excitation parameters for magnetization state of steel cable is discussed. Then, ANSYS finite element software is used to do electromagnetic simulation for the sensor and cable in which the magnetic flux density of the cable and sensor can be displayed. According to the simulation results, the influence of the cable magnetization by choosing different materials and size of the sensor is analyzed. On the side of hardware design, based on Cortex-A8 core board, the excitation module, the signal conditioning module, the data acquisition module and the WIFI module are designed. On the side of software design, based on Wince 6.0 operating system, the interactive interface of the stress detection system is designed and the embedded application software to make these modules work is developed. Finally, experiments are conducted to compare the detection results under unidirectional excitation and bidirection excitation. Experiment data shows that steel cables are more sensitive to stress when using bidirection excitation method. Besides, the functions of hardware and software are verified by analyzing the experiment results.
