As one of the cultural relics in historic and cultural city Taiyuan, Tianlong grottoes contains stone caves from the Eastern Wei Dynasty from Tang dynasty which carries long-standing culture and history and bears varies values of historical, societal, and, artistic. tian long grottoes are surrounded by beauty scenery and hills. It includes grottoes, historic buildings, pine trees, stones, spring water etc. Grottoes and it’s surroundings are a perfect combination of cultural relics and natural relics. The researches of Tianlong grottoes are sufficient and detailed, nevertheless, the researches and designs of it’s surroundings which based on cultural relics protection are little. With the historical issues, imperfection management and complicated surroundings, make it difficult to exhibit the grottoes in good way, which result in inadequate preservation and utilization.This paper summarize the characteristics of heritage surroundings based on Tianlong grottoes and it’s surrounding’s description. Combined with writer’s research, interview, inquiry, cases from domestic and overseas, based on the cultural relics protection, design the preservation facilities of grottoes, environmental landscapes and touring facilities. In this way we can put fresh blood into relics itself and better exhibit the grottoes, through the planning and design of surroundings, based on historical relics authenticity and integrality protection. Make the relics alive and make better use of it, which enhance the use of it and the protection of it, at the same time Chinese traditional culture and article were broadcasted.According to the study of Tianlong grottoes and it’s surroundings, summarize the issues of it. On this basis, making detailed design and plan of it’s surroundings, which inspire the design and plan of Tianlong grottoes surroundings. Meanwhile this paper enlighten the other design of surroundings through the brief analysis of the significances and principles of cultural relics surroundings. This thesis including five chapters:First chapter: Discuss the topic’s meaning and purpose. Briefly talk about the objects of study, and introduce the research trends of domestic and overseas.Second chapter: Through referring informations and field research, making summarize of Tianlong grottoes in current situation. On this basis, exposit the value of Tianlong grottoes, which makes foundation of it’s surrounding’s plan and design.Third chapter: Combined with current situation of Tianlong grottoes, define it’s ranges. Analysis it’s surrounding’s current situation through the field research.Forth chapter: Explained the related legislations and the characteristics of Tianlong grottoes. According to that, to make the design and plan of it’s surroundings.Fifth chapter: According to the research of Tianlong grottoes surrounding ‘s plan and design, summarize the principles of Tianlong grottoes surrounding plan and the design theories of cultural relics surrounding design.
