Librarianship in China is in a stage of rapid development, leading to a large number of library constructions. However, practical situation has demonstrated that some new libraries are inconsistent with the actual demand, energy-guzzling and inconvenient in use along with cost-benefit trade-off problems. In order to raise their utilization efficiency, improving the e economical efficiency of library buildings has become an important research topic. As a non-profit cultural institution, the library has limited funds for building and operating management, which can be a challenge for construction, operation and maintenance of the new library.Based on the theory of the whole life cycle, the author has explored the economical efficiency of the library building at different stages, in order to provide decision support for design, construction and operation of the new library. Firstly, we discuss and analyze the literature and theories on economical character of architecture, building costs, building benefits, life-cycle costs, and other related fields. Next, in terms of the analysis of the university library construction in Jiangsu province, we not only summarize the characteristics and development trends of the university library, but raise the economic problems. Thus, we research the economic construction of library from three aspects:construction cost, building benefit and use-cost. Then, on the basis of post-occupancy evaluation method, we investigate the five university libraries in Jiangsu province by field observations, interviews, and questionnaires, thereby clarifying the economic costs and operation of library. Particularly, we have interviewed the curator in charge of the library construction project to explore the specific content of the library building economy. Finally, we comprehensively summarize the principles of the economic library building and make recommendations for future development in order to improve the economical efficiency of the library buildings.
